A devil on skates, mystical visions of religious ecstacy, and naked ladies with blueberries for heads!

We often talk about Miller’s quintessential “love letter to Big Sur,” his “Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch,” but who, exactly, was Hieronymus Bosch?

Glad you asked.

Check out this great article in Fast Company looking at a new and lavish book compiling the complete works of this medieval master-painter in one collection.  It’s all there: a devil on skates, mystical visions of religious ecstasy, and naked ladies with blueberries for heads!

But to answer our original question:

More than 400 years before LSD was even invented, the Netherlandish artist Hieronymus Bosch created some of history’s trippiest paintings. His scenes feature such grotesqueries as devils on ice skates; hare-headed demons; knights being eaten alive by dog-lizard hybrids; and a pig in a nun’s habit kissing a naked man. He makes Salvador Dali look like Norman Rockwell.
