Keely is the best and also an avid reader.
We order her recommendations for the store!
Here are three titles, particular, that really resonate with her:
Kristin Hannah always knocks it out of the park and her latest book, chronicling the career of a young army nurse in Vietnam is one of her strongest hits yet.
Hannah centers women’s stories often in the form of historical fiction placed in times when we hear mostly stories of men. “The Nightingale” is a piece set in Nazi occupied Paris, “The Four Winds” is set in the dust bowl era, and they each feature strong female characters.
“The Women” would be a great gift for any strong woman in your life.
“Crossroads” by Jonathan Franzen
Set in the early 70s, this piece by Franzen – who draws characters better than almost any other author – focuses on the adolescent children of a pastor in the suburbs.
Questions of faith, marriage, and family make this one a challenging read – challenging the readers’ beliefs in those very institutions as one reads the stories of characters going through the same.
Mother-Daughter Murder Night by Nina Simon
Set locally in Elkhorn Slough and by Santa Cruz-based author Nina Simon, this piece is a fun read.
Those familiar with the area will feel at home as three generations of women dig in – extra-judicially – to find out how a body came to be discovered floating in the slough. Family, the power of women, and land development collide in this cozy murder mystery.
